What's actually changing

Old paper Yellow Slips issued to UK nationals need to be exchanged for a biometric residence card — the UKW1 or UKW3 — by 3 August 2026. This is a residence-document requirement, separate from GESY itself. But because GESY registration relies on your ARC number being correctly recorded, an expired or outdated residence document can stop your application before it even starts.

Why this trips up GESY registration specifically

GESY checks your details against the Civil Registry, Migration, and Social Insurance records during enrolment. If your underlying residence document has lapsed or is in the process of being replaced, that check can fail or stall — not because GESY itself has an issue with you, but because the records it's checking against are in flux. This is exactly the kind of cross-department snag that's easy to miss until you're already mid-registration.

What to do

1. Check whether you're still holding the old paper Yellow Slip or have already been issued a UKW1/UKW3 biometric card.
2. If you haven't made the swap, do this first — before starting or continuing any GESY enrolment.
3. Once your biometric card is in hand and your ARC number is confirmed current, proceed with GESY registration as normal for your eligibility category (employed, S1 pensioner, MEU3, or dependent).
